Smart shaving is the only way to shave. So here’s a great rule of thumb!

We’ve all seen the the shaving commercials, whether it is for wet-shaving (Gillette) or dry-shaving (Braun). They are all promoting the same thing… a smooth, close shave. Nothing wrong with that! After all, I think we all can appreciate a close shave, including myself!

Hair above the skinline

But what about those guys that suffer with irritated skin after such a close shave? No worries, I’ve got you covered!

Because when it comes to shaving there is always an answer…

If you want a close shave without the irritation, keep the hair “above“the skin-line. Try a pair of trimmers (Andis – T Outliner, my favorite!), this gives your face the appearance of a very close shave but the hair is slightly above the skin. The only downfall to this practice is that in order to keep this look, a daily trim is required. However, in my opinion, shaving like this keeps the face looking smooth without the annoying appearance of discolored and frustrating ingrown hairs.

Side Note: After shaving… DO NOT use rubbing alcohol to cool the skin. Instead, rinse the face with cool water and apply an aftershave balm (try The Store to get a few ideas!)

I’m going to get right to it on this post. Schick Quattro Titanium Trimmer. Have you seen them in the shaving aisle? They’ve been on the market for sometime now; however, I have always written them off as something that couldn’t possibly work (I know, I know…). So the other day while on a cruise, there just so happened to be one in my welcome basket, and I decided to try it. To my pleasant surprise, it works…and well!

Now, Schick claims that it is good for body trimming as well as shaving and edging. But, I found that the trimmer works best for daily maintenance of your hair (sideburns, etc.) not a full-on body trim.

Schick Quattro Titanium Trimmer

It has three very specific functions: Shaves, Edges and Trims (ALL can be done while in the shower!!!) I personally haven’t seen daily maintenance made so easy.

4 blades for a close shave (however, irritation prone beards…beware!)

Single blade for edging (sideburns, moustaches, etc.)

Trimmer - impressive power for a single AAA battery! Also, comes with an adjustable guard for keeping those stray hairs in check!

What can I say…I’m impressed, especially with it’s price tag of about $12. It won’t replace your plug-in clippers or trimmers, but they certainly will shave a few minutes off of your morning routine, not to mention being a great option for you road-warriors that jetset for business!

Two of the most common questions I get from clients and readers are, “how do I maintain my sideburns in between barbershop visits?” and “how do I keep them [sideburns] even?”

Here’s how you maintain them!

The easiest way to keep your ‘burns under control (no matter the shape or size), is with a pair of trimmers, nothing fancy, just something that can be plugged in (for more power), and comes with guards. Because your sideburns can be a combination of beard hair and head hair, consider trimming them every 2-3 days.

To keep them close, start with the highest # guard and work your way down the #’s to get the desired length, trimming up (jaw to temple) to remove the most bulk. To keep the bulk and remove the stray hairs, trim downward (temple to jawline), which also gives a smoother appearance.

Even them out!

Try the “pointer finger” test. Take both index fingers and place them respectively at the bottom of your left and right sideburn. Have a look in the mirror, and take notice of which finger is higher on the side of your face than the other. If you like the length of the higher one, trim the longer one a little at a time (while continuing to use the “pointer finger” test) until it’s even with the other.

Hope this helps!
